Ham Radio Transceivers
In ham radio, the primary device is known as a transceiver. A transceiver is a device that incorporates the functions of both a transmitter and receiver into one. When buying (or building a transceiver, one must first account for their ham radio experience. Depending on one’s license, the operator may be able to utilize the entire amateur spectrum. For this reason, it is best that beginners (Technician level) hams start out with a monoband arrangement. Once upgraded to the General class, hams are able to access 83% of all shortwave bandwidth. Going even further, an Amateur Extra Class ham can access all of the amateur DX windows, and at this time should seriously consider investing in a multiband transceiver. Transceivers are available in handheld and larger base stations, and depending on the model, operate on different frequencies. Transceivers can vary from simple analog setups to complex digital stations with spectrum analysis and DSP capabilities. The least expensive models are handheld devices, primarily operating on FM frequencies. By moving to a fixed transceiver and/or one with multiband capabilities, the prices typically increase.
